We define philanthropy as the giving of resources in an engaged and strategic way for maximum impact and in a tax efficient manner. It can include the giving of money, assets, time, talent, voice and one’s social capital. We believe in the power of philanthropy as a great social connector and the source of many great opportunities.

A new report from New Philanthropy Capital (NPC) highlights 10 recent innovations in philanthropy from across the world.

10 Innovations in Global Philanthropy, which was published last week, examines interesting ways in which philanthropic organisations are innovating and thus improving impact, from the US to India to the UK.

The report analyses the following innovations:

An emerging profession: The higher education philanthropy workforce

This report, published in April 2014, was commissioned by The Higher Education Funding Council for England to address one of the recommendations in 'Review of Philanthropy in UK Higher Education: 2012 status report and challenges for the next decade' (the Pearce report), specifically the future development and training needs of the higher education philanthropy workforce.

Give Me A Break: Why the UK should not aspire to a 'US Style' culture of charitable giving

This report, published in March 2014, brings together the latest thinking and figures on US and UK giving and suggests that the UK should not attempt to import US style giving wholesale - nor could it. It concludes that the UK should embrace the strengths of its own philanthropic culture, that include a propensity to respond generously to fundraising appeals, its long tradition of charitable giving and its generous - though complex - charitable tax relief system.

A heads-up from the US to non-profits comes in the form of a new report on the next generation of philanthropists that highlights a focus on impact, values-based giving and high engagement.
