The 2015 World Giving Index, published by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), has found that the United Kingdom is the most generous nation in Europe and sixth most generous in the world, with Myanmar taking the top spot in the world.
The United Kingdom moved up one place in the list compared to 2014’s report but remains behind Myanmar, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
CAF’s World Giving Index, now on its sixth edition, is based on Gallup’s World View World Poll which surveys a representative sample in 145 countries. The study uses three indicators to measure generosity: the proportion of those who in the past month have given money to charity, volunteered their time or helped a stranger.
The UK improved on all three indicators when compared to last year’s report which lead to the UK surpassing Ireland as Europe’s most generous country. At 75%, the number of people in the UK who donated to charity was one of the highest in the world (4th).
In global terms the study indicates that more people are giving to good causes. The research found that 31.5% (1.4bn) of people (those aged 15 and older) had given money to charity in 2014 – an increase from the 28.3% in 2013.
